In commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the death of Joseph Haydn, the Vienna Philharmonic has released a special edition of live perform- ances of several of Haydn's symphonies. This special edition is available at the Vienna Philharmonic E-Shop.
Vienna Philharmonic at the Grafenegg Music Festival
The Vienna Philharmonic concert season 2010/2011 opens with the orchestra's second appearance at the Grafenegg Music Festival. On September 12th, Nikolaus Harnoncourt conducts a program featuring exclusively works of Ludwig van Beethoven on the open air stage "Wolkenturm", which opened in 2007. The soloist in Beethoven's Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 1 is Lang Lang, who made his first appearance with the Vienna Philharmonic in Schönbrunn in 2005, and has since been a regular guest of our orchestra.
Concerts with Nikolaus Harnoncourt
Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Honorary Member of the Vienna Philharmonic, is one of the two conductors of a major concert project. At the onset of the 2010/11 concert season, the orchestra performs not only in Vienna, but also in Linz, Lucerne and the USA. Harnoncourt conducts programs with compositions by Ludwig van Beethoven and Bedřich Smetana. The Chinese pianist Lang Lang, who within only a few years has developed into one of the most well-known instrumentalists in the world, performs Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 1.
Concerts with Gustavo Dudamel
The young Venezuelan conductor Gustavo Dudamel also appears with the Vienna Philharmonic as part of an extended concert project at the onset of the 2010/11 season. The Music Director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic conducts works by Rossini, Orbon, Bernstein, Ravel, Brahms, and Dvořák in Vienna, Lucerne and the USA. In New York, Yo-Yo Ma, one of the world's most prominent cellists, performs as soloist in Schumann's Cello Concerto. The same part will be performed in Lucerne by Nicolas Altstaedt, winner of this year's Credit Suisse Young Artists Award.
Subscription Concert Debut of Esa-Pekka Salonen
The Finnish conductor and composer Esa-Pekka Salonen gives his Vienna Philharmonic Subscription Concert Series debut in October 2010. Esa-Pekka Salonen was Principal Conductor of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra from 1985-1995 and Music Director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic from 1992-2009. Since 2008, Salonen has been Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor of the Philharmonia Orchestra. Esa-Pekka Salonen first conducted the Vienna Philharmonic during the Salzburg Festival 2008. The program for the 1st Subscription Concerts features works by Richard Wagner and Anton Bruckner. In a concert for the Society of Friends of Music in Vienna Salonen conducts the 9th Symphony of Gustav Mahler.
Vienna Philharmonic Haydn Edition
In commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the death of Joseph Haydn in 2009, the Vienna Philharmonic has published under its own auspices a special edition intended to give an insight into the composer's vast symphonic production while at the same time furnishing a selective documentation of the Philharmonic's own Haydn interpretations. To this end, seven symphonies from different periods of Haydn's creativity were chosen, which were recorded by the Vienna Philharmonic with five different conductors over a period of 37 years.

The Vienna Philharmonic performs two concerts for families and school classes under the baton of Venezuelan conductor Gustavo Dudamel on September 18th and 23rd. In these moderated, one hour concerts, the audiences will hear excerpts from the Divertimento for Symphonic Band by Leonard Bernstein and explore the composer's childhood, then find out the latest from Venezuela before embarking on a fascinating journey through the multi-facetted world of orchestral sound with Maurice Ravel's Bolero. An Appreciation of Otto Nicolai
This year the international music world commemorates the 200th birthday of several composers. In 1810, Frédéric Chopin was born on March 1st in Żelazowa Wola and Robert Schumann was born on June 8th in Zwickau. The Vienna Philharmonic celebrates an even more significant anniversary with the birthday of Otto Nicolai on June 9, 1810, in Königsberg.
Beethoven Cycle Berlin & Paris
The Vienna Philharmonic under Christian Thielemann performs the complete Beethoven Symphonies in Berlin and Paris in November and Dezember 2010.
